Children's Dental Health Day: February is Children's Dental Health Month
The Hudson Valley Girl Scout Council visited the Dental Hygiene Clinic on the first Saturday in February. The girl scouts are engaged in a collaborative and interactive tour of the Dr. Robert H. Hill II Dental Clinic, learning from students enrolled in the Dental Hygiene, Nursing, Respiratory Therapy and Early Childhood Education Departments. Topics covered included proper handwashing techniques, proper oral hygiene care, nutrition, smoking cessation and reading.
Special Smiles – Special Olympics
Hudson Valley Community College's Dental Hygiene Department joined with multiple health professionals around the area in October and February. These one-day events, sponsored by the Special Olympics, are aimed at providing free dental screenings and education, along with blood pressure and eye exams as a way to raise awareness for the need for early and consistent health care for all athletes involved in Special Olympics. Hundreds of athletes were screened at the event, part of thousands nationwide.
Dental Hygiene students dedicate an evening with the residents at Joseph's House Homeless Shelter in Troy, NY each semester. Students and Faculty cook and serve the residents of the shelter and then perform oral hygiene instruction for all interested participants. Each semester the Hygiene Department takes up a collection of money and needed toiletries and clothing that the shelter participants can use on the cold winter northeast nights.
Dental Hygiene Achievement Ceremony
The Dental Hygiene Department hosts a Professional Awards and Achievement Ceremony each spring. Scholarships and awards are supported by local dental and dental hygiene societies as well as dental companies.
The graduating senior class is presented with the Hudson Valley Community College Dental Hygiene Pin at this ceremony. The presentation of the pin celebrates the students' transition into the dental hygiene profession. The Third and Fourth District Dental Societies generously purchased the pins. We would like to thank the members of these organizations for their support.
