Sophomore Brenna Mereness (Castleton/Maple Hill High School) has scored 47 goals in her illustrious career at Hudson Valley Community College but none were more important than the goal she scored to lift the Hudson Valley (11-5-1) women’s soccer team to a 2-1 upset win over Tompkins Cortland Community College on Tuesday in Dryden.

In the 83rd minute, Mereness carried the ball down the left side past a couple of defenders and blasted the game-winning goal past the keeper.

With the win, seventh-seeded Hudson Valley has advanced to the NJCAA Region III semifinals and will meet Herkimer County Community College at 12:15 p.m. on Saturday in Dryden. Tompkins Cortland, which entered the game as the tournament’s second seed and the fifth-ranked team in the nation, finished its season with a 14-4 record.

Hudson Valley took the lead early on a rainy and windy night. Just eight minutes into the game, Shannon Goyer (Petersburgh/Berling High School) scored on a header, popping the ball up over TC3 keeper Andi Mowry (Central Dauphin H.S./Harrisburg, Penn.). The score remained 1-0 after a sluggish first half.

Early in the second half, TC3 evened the score. Rasmita Taylert (Charles O. Dickerson H.S./Trumansburg) worked the ball down the right side, playing a cross to Danielle Hiza (Johnson City H.S./Johnson City) in front of the goal. Hiza scored on a sliding kick to even the score at 1-1 in the 58th minute.
