The #3 seeded Hudson Valley Community College women's basketball team (18-7) defeated #6 Fulton-Montgomery Community College (17-10) 61-46 in the opening round of the Region III Basketball Tournament at Tompkins-Cortland Community College. The Vikings were down by five points with less than five seconds to go in the first half, but after a pair of free throws from Kelly Kell (Kingston/Kingston) and a quick turnover and three-point field goal by Erica Houle (Shaker/Latham), the Vikings went into the half tied.
The momentum carried over into the second half as Hudson Valley jumped out to a quick lead and never looked back. Kelly Kell had a game-high 20 points and Arianna Youngs (Lansingburgh/Lansingburgh) chipped in a double-double, recording 10 points and 11 rebounds.
The Vikings will play #2 seeded Mohawk Valley Community College (26-3) on Saturday, Feb. 26 at 1 p.m., at Tompkins-Cortland Community College. The Vikings split the season series with Mohawk Valley, with each team getting a win on the opposing team's home court.
