The Hudson Valley Community College women's basketball team (13-7) ran its winning streak to eight with a victory over Adirondack Community College, 62-43, on Tuesday, Feb. 2.

The Timberwolves of Adirondack led 14-4 after the first 10 minutes of the game as the Lady Vikings could not put the ball in the basket. But, a Paige Colfer (Watervliet, Menands) offensive rebound and put back with 4:20 to go ignited the women to take the led at halftime, 19-16. Hudson Valley shot a woeful 20% for the half but was able to hold Adirondack to 19% shooting.

The Lady Vikings started the second half on a 16-6 run in the first six minutes. Laurel Jicha (Hanibal, Hanibal) was the major contributor to Hudson Valley taking a double-digit lead as she scored seven quick points during the stretch, including a three-pointer that pushed the lead to 10. Rita Holland's (Shenendehowa, Clifton Park) touch from the free throw line and Alex Brazill's (Waterford Halfmoon, Waterford) dominance around the basket helped to extend the lead to 58-39 with less than five minutes to play.

Three Hudson Valley players cashed in double-doubles on the night. Colfer had her third 20 rebound game in a row. The current Region III Player of the Week's final totals came to 14 points and 20 rebounds. Brazill put up 16 points and 10 rebounds, and Holland scored 12 points and grabbed 11 rebounds. Jicha got into double-figure scoring with 11 points. Molly McGrouty (Watervliet, Watervliet) once again orchestrated the Hudson Valley offense, dishing out seven assists in the contest.

The women will be on the road at Mohawk Valley on Saturday, Feb. 6. Mohawk Valley is currently the NJCAA number four ranked team in the nation for Division III women's basketball. Tip is at 1 p.m.
