Hudson Valley Women’s Basketball Wins Opener

The Hudson Valley Community College (1-0) women’s basketball team used a stifling second half defense to defeat Dutchess Community College, 59-43, in the opening game of the Viking Club Invitational played today in Troy.
Hudson Valley limited Dutchess to just 26.6 percent (eight-of-30) shooting from the field and forced 10 turnovers in the second half that helped the Lady Vikings pull away for the win.
Freshman Jenna Hughes (Poestinkill/Averill Park High School) finished with 15 points, eight rebounds and four steals to lead Hudson Valley. Freshman Ryan Graham (Menands/Shaker High School) had 12 points and eight rebounds and sophomore Molly McGuire (Ravena/Ravena-Coeymans-Selkirk High School) added 11 points and eight boards. Freshman Jackie Carraway (Troy/Lansinburgh High School) contributed nine points, seven boards and six steals.
Jena Belluzzi (East Fishkill/John Jay High School) had 16 points to pace Dutchess (0-1).
Hudson Valley will meet Schenectady County Community College in the championship game at 2 p.m. on Sunday, November 5.
