Hudson Valley Starts Second Half With A 31-0 Run;
Squires Scores 26 Points In Hudson Valley Victory

Troy, February 3 – Herkimer County Community College's women's basketball team got an early breather thanks to a fire alarm this afternoon, but the Lady Generals couldn't avoid Hudson Valley Community College's pressure for long. Following the false alarm, which occurred after the Lady Vikings took a 2-0 lead on a fast break bucket, the two teams traded baskets for the next 13 minutes.

The score was tied at 15 points apiece with 6:43 remaining in the first half.

Then Hudson Valley, ranked sixth in the nation among NJCAA Division III teams, implemented a new defensive wrinkle, throwing an effective and unforgiving half-court pressure at Herkimer. En route to a 76-35 Mountain Valley Conference victory at Troy's McDonough Complex, Hudson Valley closed out the first half with an 18-10 run.

Freshman point guard Megan Davis (Greenwich), who applied most of the trapping pressure with first-year guard/forward Lindsey Bradt (Catholic Central), recorded three steals during the stretch. Bradt finished the first half with 14 points and nine rebounds.

Things got even better for the Lady Vikings in the second half, who were playing without injured co-captain Kara Sheehan (Catholic Central), as they held Herkimer scoreless for the first 14:19.

Freshman Meagan Squires (Hoosic Valley) tallied a game-high 26 points. The 6-foot center also contributed 13 rebounds and five blocks. Bradt, who sat out most of the second half as Hudson Valley head coach Colleen Ferris rotated players off the bench, contributed 18 points, 13 rebounds and four steals. Davis scored 14 points and had four steals and four assists.

Hudson Valley improved to 20-1 with the win. Herkimer is now 10-10.
