Community College, 74-70
FOR RELEASE: Immediate, Monday, November 6, 2000
Cayuga, November 5 - First-year guard/forward Lindsey Bradt (Bishop Maginn) took over twice this afternoon, putting Hudson Valley Community College's women's basketball team ahead of Cayuga Community College early in the first half and keeping the Lady Vikings ahead in the game's final 3:26. Hudson Valley won 74-70.
Bradt, a five-foot-eight physical education major, exploded in
the Mountain Valley Conference matchup's opening 3:29, contributing nine points, a block and a steal. She helped Hudson Valley seize a 13-3 lead, which it would never relinquish.
As the second half wound down, however, the pesky Cayuga squad clawed its way back into the mix. That's when Bradt went to work again. With 3:30 remaining and Hudson Valley leading by just one, 64-63, Bradt hit four free throws and a running layup to secure the victory.
"Whenever we need a quick basket, she's driving," second-year
head coach Colleen Ferris said. "She's got that mentality, she doesn't want to lose."
Bradt wound up with a game-high 26 points, as well as seven rebounds, four assists, three steals and two blocks. After a quiet first 20 minutes, five-foot-four guard Meaghen Hampton (James J. O'Neill) also came up big in the second half, kicking in eight points, seven steals, two blocks and two rebounds.
"I told her I needed her to be more aggressive on defense," Ferris said. "She played a great second half."
Bradt said, "Meaghen told me in the locker room that she knew she had to step it up. And she did."
Kara Sheehan (Catholic Central) had 11 points, seven rebounds and three assists for Hudson Valley (2-0). The loss dropped Cayuga to 1-1.
"This is one of the longest road trips we'll take this season,"
said Ferris of the three-hour bus ride to Cayagu, which is located near Auburn. "We had to prove to ourselves we could come off the bus and win."
