Second-year players Kara Sheehan (Catholic Central) and Melissa Lappies (Troy) were named co-captains of the 2000-01 women's basketball team at Hudson Valley Community College.

Sheehan, a five-foot-eight guard/forward, earned Hudson Valley's Most Valuable Player award last year. She averaged 17.4 points and 8.0 rebounds per game, and was named to the Second Team All-Mountain Valley Conference squad. An individual studies major, she is also a member of Hudson Valley's Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society.

"Sheehan will provide leadership on and off the court," second-year head coach Colleen Ferris said. "She shot 45% from the field last season, making her an offensive threat."

In addition to playing basketball at Hudson Valley, Lappies played varsity soccer this year, helping the Lady Vikings post an 8-5-1 record. A five-foot-seven guard/forward, she competed in basketball, soccer, softball, track and swimming at Troy High School. Lappies is a physical education major.

"As a veteran and captain, Lappies knows full well what is takes to be successful at this level," Ferris said. "She has fine-tuned her skills to include a consistent outside shot, which will compliment her driving abilities very well."

Hudson Valley Community College, located in Troy, offers more than 50 degree and certificate programs in four academic divisions; Business; Engineering and Industrial Technologies; Health Sciences; and Liberal Arts and Sciences.
