Three Hudson Valley Community College women's basketball players earned All-Mountain Valley Conference accolades today for their play during the 2002-03 season.
Sophomores Tanya DeLaMater (Troy/Tamarac High School) and Angela Von Wergers (Albany/Bishop Gibbons High School), and first-year student Latrice Cowart (Severn, MD/Meade High School) were named to the conference's Second Team. Additionally, fourth-year head coach Colleen Ferris earned Second Team coach honors.
DeLaMater, who was named a Second Team All-Region III performer last week, led the Lady Vikings with 15.4 points and 5.4 assists per game this year. She finished her two-year Hudson Valley career with 653 points and 246 assists.
Von Wergers, along with Cowart, finished with a school-record 312 rebounds this year. She averaged 13.4 points and 10.4 rebounds per contest in 2002-03, finishing her Hudson valley career with 554 points and 446 rebounds. Additionally, Von Wergers was named to the Region III Third Team last week.
Cowart averaged 11.6 rebounds per game during her freshman campaign, which is the second highest single-season average in school history. Her 312 rebounds also tie Von Wergers for the highest single-season rebounding total in school history. Cowart, who also was named to the Region III Third Team last week, shot 46.0 percent (154-for-335) from the floor en route to 12.7 points per contest this year.
Ferris led the Vikings to a 20-10 record and a spot in the NJCAA region III semifinals this year. It's the third straight 20-win season Hudson Valley has had under Ferris.
In the 2001-02 academic year, Hudson Valley's athletic teams combined to win 65 percent of their contests. The college's softball team traveled to Illinois for the national championship tournament and finished second in the country, and the women's basketball team placed seventh in the nation. Hudson Valley's football team won the Northeast Football Conference, and the baseball and bowling squads each added a Mountain Valley Conference title. Additionally, three Vikings earned Region III Player-of-the-Year status and eight were honored with All-American status.
