Von Wergers, Cowart Establish Single-Season Rebound Mark

The Hudson Valley Community College women's basketball team had its season come to a close earlier today with a 54-40 loss to Fulton- Montgomery Community College in the semifinals of the NJCAA Region III tournament in Utica, New York.

Hudson Valley, the tournament's fourth seed, finishes the season with a 20-10 record while top seed Fulton-Montgomery improves to 30-2. It's the third straight 20-win season for Hudson Valley.

Sophomore forward Carolyn Keeler (Cohoes/Cohoes High School) led Hudson Valley with 15 points. Freshman center Latrice Cowart (Severn, MD/Meade High School) finished with nine points and 12 rebounds while sophomore center Angela Von Wergers (Albany/Bishop Gibbons High School) had eight points and 11 boards. Cowart and Von Wergers finished the season with 312 rebounds apiece, establishing a new Hudson Valley single-season rebound record. The old mark of 308 boards was set by Julie Broadhead in the 1991-92 season.

"You have to consider it a good season anytime you win 20 games," said Hudson Valley head coach Colleen Ferris. "We played very hard today but Fulton-Montgomery's defense made it tough for us to score."

Fulton-Montgomery took control of the contest early in the second half with a 14-1 run that turned a 25-20 deficit into a 34-26 lead with 10:39 remaining. The Lady Vikings would get no closer than four points after that spurt.

Hudson Valley used an 11-0 run to take a 21-13 lead with 4:10 remaining in the first half. The Raiders then scored four straight points to cut their deficit in half heading into the break.

Hudson Valley struggled to score the entire game, making just 13 of its 50 shots from the floor (.260).

Sophomore guard Latasha Witherspoon (New haven, CT) led fulton- Montgomery with 14 points.
