The inside tandem of Angela Von Wergers (Albany/Bishop Gibbons High School) and Latrice Cowart (Severn, MD/Meade High School) combined for 33 points and 29 rebounds to lead Hudson Valley Community College (4-1) to a 60-52 win over Schenectady County Community College in women's basketball action earlier tonight in Troy.
Cowart, who has 46 rebounds in her last three games, finished with 16 points and 18 boards for the Lady Vikings. Von Wergers had 17 points and 11 rebounds while Carolyn Keeler (Cohoes/Cohoes High School) finished with 14 points and five assists. Tanya DeLaMater (Troy/Tamarac High School) added 12 points and six assists for Hudson Valley.
Darcell Lucas (Schenectady High School) finished with a game-high 19 points to lead Schenectady (0-3). Hillary Miller (Cairo-Durham High School) hit a trio of three-point buckets to finish with 13 points, and Rene Klementowski (Scotia High School) added eight points.
After Hudson Valley had opened up a 52-40 lead with six minutes left in the game, the Royals stormed back to cut their deficit to four, 52-48, capped off with a basket by Lucas with 4:32 remaining. Hudson Valley never let its opponent get any closer as back-to-back buckets by Von Wergers and Keeler put Schenectady away for good.
Hudson Valley will head to New England on Saturday, November 16 for a weekend set against a pair of NJCAA Division II clubs. The Lady Vikings will meet Dean College on Saturday and will play at Community College of Rhode Island on Sunday, November 17. Both games are scheduled to tip-off at 1 p.m.
