The Hudson Valley Community College women's basketball team is ranked fourth in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division III preseason poll released earlier today.

Hudson Valley improves on its preseason No. 5 ranking from a year ago when the Lady Vikings finished 26-6 and made their first appearance in the NJCAA Division III National Championship Tournament since 1993.

"It's nice to be recognized as one of the top junior college programs in the country, but a preseason ranking doesn't guarantee us wins," said head coach Colleen Ferris. "We are a different team from last year and still have to prove ourselves on the court."

The Lady Vikings return two starters from their 2002 NJCAA Region III championship team. Guards Carolyn Keeler (Cohoes, NY/Cohoes) and Tanya DeLaMater (Troy, NY/Tamarac) provide Ferris with an experienced backcourt to work with.

Keeler started all 33 games her freshman year and was third on the team with 7.9 points and 4.8 rebounds per game. DeLaMater, who played the off-guard position last season, is expected to run the offense this year at the point. A starter in 27 games, DeLaMater scored 5.8 points and dished out 2.5 assists per contest.

Hudson Valley opens its season on Friday, November 1 at home against Finger Lakes Community College. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.

In the 2001-02 academic year, Hudson Valley's athletic teams combined to win 65 percent of their contests. The college's softball team traveled to Illinois for the national championship tournament and finished second in the country, and the women's basketball team placed seventh in the nation. Hudson Valley's football team won the Northeast Football Conference, and the baseball and bowling squads each added a Mountain Valley Conference title. Additionally, three Vikings earned Region III Player-of-the-Year status and eight were honored with All-American status.
