Fourth-year head coach Chris Kelly has the Hudson Valley Community College volleyball team headed in the right direction.

Prior to the 2004 season, the program had gone eight years without qualifying for the Region III tournament. However, over the last two years, the Lady Vikings have proved to be a team to reckon with in the Region and are in search of their third straight postseason appearance entering the 2006 campaign.

With only two players returning from a year ago, the team will need to be able to come together quickly to ensure they make the regional tournament in 2006.

“We’ve had very good chemistry this fall,” said Kelly. “We’ll be a scrappy team and should be one of the better defensive teams I have had here.”

Sophomore Jannetta Briscoe (Schenectady/Schenectady High School) is the leading returning player for Hudson Valley. She averaged 1.1 kills and 3.4 digs per game as a freshman. Sophomore Elissa Sousa (Amsterdam/Amsterdam High School) played in 21 games as a back row player and averaged 1.5 digs per game.

Hudson Valley will begin its season on Saturday, September 2 at the Corning Invitational. The Lady Vikings will meet host Corning Community College in the opening match.
