Hudson Valley Volleyball Team Earns Academic Award

The National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) recognized the Hudson Valley Community College volleyball team with the Academic Team-of-the-Year Award – given annually to NJCAA member teams with a combined grade point average of 3.0 and above.

Hudson Valley's combined 3.18 grade point average ranks in the top 30 of nearly 300 NJCAA volleyball teams.

The team members are: Rachel Bishop (Red Hook/Red Hook High School), Kathryn Chandler (Warwick/Warwick Valley High School), Christina Scott (Brooklyn/Canarsie High School), Jessica Yansak (Schenectady/Mohonasen High School), Jacqueline Zugzda (Perth/Broadalbin-Perth High School), Jennifer Plumer (East Greenbush/Columbia High School), Jessalyn Hotaling (Coeymans Hollow/Ravena-Coeymans-Selkirk High School), Colleen Horan (Schenectady/Mohonasen High School), Juliette Barbera (Troy/Troy High School), Amy Matarese (East Greenbush/Columbia High School) and Kathleen Brophy (Averill Park/Averill Park High School).

The Lady Vikings also excelled on the court in 2004, qualifying for the Region III Tournament for the first time since 1996. Hudson Valley is coached by Chris Kelly.

Hudson Valley athletic teams have won this award three times in the last two semesters. In addition to volleyball last fall, the softball team and lacrosse team were named Academic Teams of the Year following the spring 2004 semester.
