As a sophomore on the Hudson Valley Community College volleyball team, Christine Kelly led the Lady Vikings to a 25-6-1 record and a third place finish in the National Junior College Athletic Association Region III tournament. Fifteen years later, the second-year head coach is hoping to guide the Lady Vikings back to the top of the region and the Mountain Valley Conference.

"We want to finish among the top two or three teams in the conference," said Kelly. "It's tough to tell exactly where we are until we see the other teams in the conference, but I like the way the team is performing right now. They don't give up on the ball. The players continue to make that extra effort."

Sophomore setter Courtney Ross (Ravena/Ravena-Coeymans-Selkirk High School) is the lone returning player from last year's 6-15-2 team. She averaged 7.57 assists per game and was second on the team with 30 service aces in 69 games.

"Courtney is our team leader on the court," said Kelly. "She gives us 110% every game."

Leading the newcomers are freshmen middle hitters Rachel Bishop (Red Hook/Red Hook High School) and Stefanie Bowman (Delmar/Bethlehem High School).

"We're strong in the middle," said Kelly. "Rachel is a powerful hitter and is very focused. She has the potential to be one of the top hitters in the conference. Stefanie is very versatile. She was mainly a backline player in high school but has shown that she can help us up front as well."

The Lady Vikings open their season against Dean College in the Mohawk Valley Invitational on Saturday, September 6. The match begins at 9 a.m.
