The Hudson Valley Community College women’s tennis team finished in second place at the Region III Championships held at SUNY-Delhi on Saturday afternoon, and qualified for the National Tournament in Flushing, NY.
Emily Qua (Ichabod Crane/Stuyvesant) was the #1 seed in the first flight women’s singles division earning a first round bye. Qua went on to defeat Onondaga (6-3, 6-2) in the semifinals on Friday, and came from behind after dropping the first set to Broome to win the first flight Region III Championship. Jenna Brophy (Greenwich/Greenwich) also was the top seed in the second flight women’s singles, and cruised to two dominating wins over Herkimer and Broome to earn the second flight championship. She defeated Emily Denney of Broome who was undefeated heading into the finals. Brophy goes into Nationals with a perfect 7-0 record on the year, and has yet to drop a single set all season. Katie Vogel (Averill Park/Averill Park) earned a first round bye as the #2 seed in the fourth flight of women’s singles. After a win over Herkimer in straight sets (6-0, 6-2), Vogel took down the undefeated #1 seed from Broome in three sets (6-4, 6-7 [5-7], 7-5) to earn the fourth flight Region III Championship.
Overall, it was a very impressive showing for the entire Viking team. All six singles flights won their opening rounds to play in the semifinals. All three doubles flights lost in the finals, with two of the three matches going into a third set tiebreak.
The Vikings will have a week off before heading to Nationals in Flushing, NY on Oct. 24.
