Women's Tennis Wins Big in Opener

The Hudson Valley Community College women’s tennis team (1-0) defeated Mohawk Valley Community College (0-1) 8-1 on Thursday afternoon.

In the first singles match, Emily Qua (Ichabod Crane/Stuyvesant) fought back after dropping the first set to win in a tiebreaker (5-7, 6-4, 10-7). Jenna Brophy (Greenwich/Greenwich) won her match in second singles (6-1, 1-0), while Haley Knight (Chatham/Canaan) came back and defeated her opponent in a tiebreaker (4-6, 6-2, 10-6). Sarah Nuss (Averill Park/Wynantskill) (6-0, 6-0) and Janel Weaver (Schenectady/Bellevue) (6-2, 6-2) both won their matches in convincing fashion to help lead the Vikings to a 5-1 edge in singles competition.

The Vikings swept the three doubles matches as Qua and Katie Vogel (Averill Park/Averill Park) won in first doubles (8-6), Weaver and Elizabeth Batchelder (Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) won in second doubles (8-2) and Hannah Infantado (Shaker/Watervliet) and Rita Tompkins (Catskill/Catskill) won in third doubles (8-1).

The women travel to Adirondack Community College Tuesday, Sept. 18 at 4 p.m.
