The Hudson Valley Community College softball team (2-0) defeated Columbia-Greene Community College (1-8) on Thursday afternoon. The Vikings won game one, 5-2, and then rallied in game two to win 3-2.
The two returning sophomores led the Vikings to a 5-2 win to open the season. Maggie Miller (Maple Hill/Schodack) threw a complete game, which included seven strikeout and no earned runs. She also added a solo homerun to help her own cause for added some run support. Emily Johnson (Tamarac/Wynantskill) picked up where she left off last season, going 2-3 at the plate with a homerun and two RBIs.
Miller added a second win to her resume in game two, going all seven innings allowing no earned runs for the second consecutive game. The Vikings trailed 2-0 heading into the bottom of the sixth before Johnson drove in a run to make it 2-1. That’s when Katie Traver (Shenendehowa/Clifton Park) stepped to the plate to hit a go-ahead two-run homerun, which was enough to seal the deal.
The softball team travels to Mohawk Valley on Saturday for a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m.
