2012 Softball Team Season Preview

Interim head coach Marlo Daniels begins her first season with the Vikings softball team. Coming off a great 2011 season, the Vikings will see some new faces in the lineup.

The Incoming pitchers Shaylah Morris (Berlin/Berlin) and Taylor Kleis (Chrysalis-Juanita/Kirkland, WA) will have to pick up the slack from last year's top two pitchers Cherish Kilventon (Cohoes/Cohoes) and Kate Cahrenger (Waterford-Halfmoon/Waterford) who have moved on. Both incoming pitchers are two-sport athletes at Hudson Valley as Morris is also a member of the volleyball team and Kleis is a member of the basketball team.

The Vikings lost one of the program's all-time greats in Molly McDonough (Lansingburgh/Lansingburgh) as well as power hitter Natalie Triano (Colonie/Albany). The team returns the leading home run slugger in Kate Brown (Colonie/Colonie) who is tied for second in Viking history with seven career home runs, and is just five shy of taking over the number one overall spot. Aimee Lefebvre (Waterford-Halfmoon/Waterford) led all freshmen last season hitting for an average just shy of .500 and will be a big part of the Viking lineup this season.

Gabriella Daniels (Troy/Troy), an incoming freshman will be expected to take over the reins at shortstop. Daniels was the 2011 Big Ten Conference MVP and was nominated for the State Player of the Year Award. Kelly Beliveau (Averill Park/Wynantskill) will come in and contribute right away at third base, while catcher/first baseman Sam Mattey (Lansingburgh/Lansingburgh) will be a valuable asset with her versatility in both positions and her power in the lineup.
