Coming off a rebuilding year, Hudson Valley's softball team exceeded all expectations entering the 2011 season. The Vikings started out 9-2, the best start in more than eight years, and finished the season with a 22-9 overall record. They hosted a sub-regional game against Jefferson Community College, winning on a walk-off hit in extra innings and advancing to the regional tournament.
Team MVP Molly McDonough (Lansingburgh/Lansingburgh) had one of the best seasons in Viking history, leading the entire nation in batting with a .635 average and earning First-Team All-Region honors. She broke the Hudson Valley single-season hit record which was at 55 and now stands at 66. Sophomore first baseman Natalie Triano (Colonie/Albany) finished the region third in batting and second in RBIs on the season.
The team will return starting pitchers Kate Cahrenger (Waterford-Halfmoon/Waterford) and Cherish Kilventon (Cohoes/Cohoes). Both pitched for 10+ wins on the season and should provide stability at the position next season. Team home run leader Kate Brown (Colonie/Colonie) also will return to the Vikings next year and should provide power in the lineup again after tying for second in the single-season home run record with seven. The Vikings also will be returning All-Conference third baseman Meghan Matan (Shaker/Latham).
