Softball Team's Sweeps Mohawk Valley; Will Host Jefferson In First Round of Regionals

The Hudson Valley Community College softball team (21-7) swept Mohawk Valley Community College (10-16) 9-1 and 18-1 on Saturday, May 7.

Kate Cahrenger (Waterford-Halfmoon/Waterford) threw a two-hitter in game one with no earned runs allowed. Molly McDonough (Lansingburgh/Lansingburgh) went 4-4 with three RBIs and Natalie Triano (Colonie/Albany) went 2-3 with three RBIs. Meghan Matan (Shaker/Latham) had a great offensive game going 2-2 with three runs scored, three stolen bases and two walks.

Cherish Kilventon (Cohoes/Cohoes) got the win on the mound in game two, spreading out three hits for only one earned run and five strikeouts. Kate Brown (Colonie/Colonie) led the Vikings with two home runs, recording three RBIs and three runs scored. The two home runs give Brown seven on the year, and move her into a tie in second place for most home runs in a season for the Vikings. Megan Mulholland (Lansingburgh/Lansingburgh), Stephanie Frederick (Greenville/Greenville) and Triano each recorded two hits in the win, combining for nine total RBIs. Matan had another great game at the plate with three hits, including a triple, two RBIs and another stolen base.

The Vikings will host Jefferson Community College (15-9) in the first round of Regionals on Tuesday, May 10 at 3 p.m. Molly McDonough, who will lead the Vikings into the post season, on Saturday afternoon was named First Team All-Region. McDonough is the new single-season hit leader in Viking history and is currently first in the nation in batting.
