Former Lady Viking Helps Cortland Softball Team to NCAAs

TROY, NY – Former Lady Viking Annemarie Nelson (Nassau, NY) has helped the SUNY Cortland softball team reach the NCAA Division III World Series. The Dragons earned their fifth trip to the NCAA Division III World Series and its third in the last six years after posting a 4-0 record in regional play last weekend at Plattsburgh.

The Red Dragons (38-11), ranked 22nd nationally, are seeded fourth in the eight-team, double-elimination tournament and will face the fifth-seeded University of Wisconsin-Whitewater (34-9) on Friday at 1:30 p.m. at the Moyer Sports Complex in Salem, Va.

Nelson, who was a first team all-region and All-SUNYAC team selection for the second consecutive year, led the team in the regular season with a .369 batting average and 25 RBI in 45 games. She recorded two homers and two triples, tied for the team lead with 10 doubles and played errorless ball in center field. In league games, Nelson hit .400 with team-highs of two homers and 17 RBI.

In the last two seasons, she has appeared in all 92 games for the Red Dragons, batting .372, with 13 home runs and 69 RBI. In 48 games last season, she batted .396, with a team-high 11 home runs and 42 RBI, while earning second team All- American honors.

In two seasons at Hudson Valley, she was a two-year starter (2004-05) and earned consecutive first team all-conference honors and was a NJCAA All-American selection in 2005.

Nelson hit .424 (36-for-85) with four doubles, four triples and a home run for Hudson Valley in 2005. She drove in a team-high 25 runs in leading the Lady Vikings to a 21-9 record. In 64 career games, she batted .430, with 19 doubles, nine triples, four home runs and 59 RBI.

The Lady Vikings finished the 2008 season with a record of 20-17. The 2008 Mountain Valley Collegiate Conference co-champions lost to Region III Tournament champion Monroe in the first round.
