No. 4 Hudson Valley To Face No. 1 Broome In Opening Game Of Region III Tourney

Hudson Valley Community College's softball
team (22-7) will compete in the NJCAA Division III Region III tournament
this weekend, facing Broome Community College (31-2) at 11 a.m. Friday.
The winner of the two-day, double-elimination event – held at Holding Point
Athletic Complex at Horseheads (near Corning, N.Y.) – advances to the national
Hudson Valley, the No. 4 seed, played its way
into the tourney by defeating defending Region III champion Adirondack
Community College, 14-7, in a sub-regional game on May 8. Angela Jackson
(Colonie) went the distance on the mound for the Lady Vikings, earning
her sixteenth win of the season against just one loss. Hudson Valley's
Kim Liney (Newburgh) was 3-for-5 with a triple. Tara Anthony
(Troy) also was 3-for-5, with two doubles and five RBI.
The Vikings open up the tourney by playing
No. 1 seed Broome. The two teams played a doubleheader on April 29, with
Jackson tossing a two-hit shutout in the opening game, which Hudson Valley
won 4-0. It was one of just two losses during the regular season for Broome,
who won the second game.
In addition to sporting a stellar 16-1 record,
Jackson, a sophomore, has thrown a no-hitter this season. She has a 1.99
ERA. Through 27 games, Liney is batting .404 with three home runs and 34
RBI. Jamie Trudeau (Cohoes) is hitting .457 and has scored 40 runs.
Anthony is batting .400. Sharee Deichman (Guilderland) is hitting
.390 with three home runs and 14 stolen bases.
