The Hudson Valley Community College (9-10/8-0 Region III) softball team swept a doubleheader at Herkimer County Community College on Wednesday. Hudson Valley won the opener, 6-1, and the nightcap, 4-3.

Hudson Valley scored four runs in the seventh inning to clinch the opener. Sophomore Kayle Countermine (Rotterdam/Schalmont High School) led off the inning with a double and was followed by back-to-back singles by sophomore Sarah Spellman (Delmar/Bethlehem High School) and freshman Brittany Grossman (Greenport/Hudson High School) that scored Countermine. After sophomore Talia Velenti (Troy/Troy High School) walked, sophomore Ashley Hoffman (East Greenbush/Columbia High School) roped a two-run single that gave Hudson Valley a commanding lead.

Hoffman, Grossman and Spellman each finished the opener with two hits. Sophomore Tracy Chesebrough (Duanesburg/Duanesburg High School) went the distance in the pitcher’s circle to pick up the win. She allowed one run on five hits. She struck out 15 and walked one.

Grossman, Spellman and freshman Kailynn Bateman (Schuylerville/Schuylerville High School) each had two hits for Hudson Valley in the second game.

Freshman Shana Flood (Glenmont/Bethlehem High School) came in to relieve Chesebrough to pitch the final two innings with the Lady Vikings clinging to a 4-3 lead. After retiring the Generals in order in the sixth inning, Flood allowed a lead off triple in the bottom of the seventh. However, Flood struck out the next two batters and Chesebrough came back in to get the final pop out.

Chesebrough allowed just four hits and one earned run in 5.1 innings of work to get the win. She struck out 10 and walked none.
