Three members of Hudson Valley Community College's nationally ranked women's softball team were recently honored. Pitcher Christyn Hamel (Averill Park H.S.) was named a First Team All-Region III performer and teammates Casey Brinkman (Troy H.S.) and Lindsey Bradt (Bishop Maginn H.S.) earned Second Team All-Region III status.

Region III encompasses more than 30 teams from across the Northeast, and Hudson Valley (29-7 overall) is the top-ranked team in the NJCAA Division III Region III tournament, which runs through Saturday in Corning N.Y. The winner advances to the Division III national championship.

Hamel led the Lady Vikings to their current No. 4 national ranking among Division III junior colleges by posting an 11-2 record and a 1.21 earned run average on the mound. She struck out 68 batters and she topped Hudson Valley with a .450 batting average.

Brinkman and Bradt, meanwhile, are competing in their second Region III championship tournament in about three months. Both played for Hudson Valley's basketball team, which won the regional title and finished the season among the top eight Division III teams in the country.

Brinkman, whom softball coach Chuck Sosnowski calls "one of the best right fielders in Region III," is hitting .415 with 25 runs batted in. She has belted eight doubles.

Bradt, Hudson Valley's all-time leading basketball scorer and a two-time Region III Player of the Year as a hoop player, holds down the shortstop spot for the Lady Vikings. Hudson Valley's leadoff hitter, she's batting .390 with 20 runs batted in, five doubles and six triples.
