Region III Title On The Line

At 11 a.m. on Friday, Hudson Valley Community College's top-seeded softball team will play fourth-seeded Alfred State College in the NJCAA Division III Region III tournament. Hudson Valley advanced to the "Final Four" of the tourney by defeating No. 8 seed Schenectady County Community College, 9-3, in a sub-regional game on Tuesday. Alfred beat fifth-seeded Mohawk Valley Community College, 6-5, in extra innings.
With four teams eliminated from the tourney on Tuesday by sub-regional games, the Region III tourney is now a double-elimination event. The seedings are as follows:
- Hudson Valley Community College
- Monroe Community College
- Adirondack Community College
- Alfred State College
This next and final round of games will be played in Corning, N.Y. The championship game will be played at 2 p.m. on Saturday, and the winner advances to the NJCAA Division III national championship. Hudson Valley (29-7 overall and ranked No. 5 in the nation among Division III junior colleges) swept a regular-season doubleheader against each of the other three remaining tournament teams.
In the 2000-01 academic year, Hudson Valley's athletic teams combined to win 72 percent of their contests. The ice hockey team won the NJCAA championship, the baseball team earned a berth in the NJCAA World Series and the football team won the Region III title. The women's basketball team earned a No. 1 national ranking and turned in a 24-3 record while the men's hoop squad competed in the Region III championship game. Additionally, two Vikings earned Region III Player-of-the-Year status, 20 were named All-Region III performers, and 10 were honored with All-American status.
