John Meehan Wins Coach Of The Year Status

Hudson Valley Community College's men's soccer team placed six players on the Mountain Valley Conference's First Team, which was released today. Additionally, second-year head coach John Meehan was named MVC Coach of the Year.

The six All-Star players are: forward Ian Gass (Guilderland H.S.); forward Joe Teator (Maple Hill H.S.); midfielder Faber Kelly (Saratoga Springs H.S.); defenseman Chris Mahigian (Tamarac H.S.); defenseman Dan DiFiore (Averill Park H.S.); and goaltender Stanley Kowalczyk (Seminole H.S., Florida).

Meehan, meanwhile, transplanted to Hudson Valley from Michigan's St. Clair High School, where the Port Huron Times Herald named him 1999 Coach of the Year. After leading the Vikings to a 10-4 record in 2000, Meehan has guided Hudson Valley to a school-record 13 wins this season (Hudson Valley's 1992 squad also won 13 games), including three against nationally ranked squads. Hudson Valley, currently ranked fifth in the nation among Division III junior colleges, has suffered just three losses in 2001, including one against the No. 11 Division I two-year college in the country.

"John Meehan has quickly helped point Hudson Valley Community College's men's soccer team in the right direction," said Drew Marrochello, Hudson Valley's athletic director. "And there's no secret to his method – he's done it with hard work and local talent. John obviously knows how strong the talent level is in the Capital District. That's why 23 of the 26 players on his roster are from Section II high schools. Players in this area know how to win. And so does John."

Prior to Meehan's arrival, in 1999, the Vikings were 7-8-2. Now, Hudson Valley is in the semifinals of the NJCAA Division III Region III playoffs. The Vikings (13-3) next travel to Herkimer County Community College for a 1 p.m. matchup with Mohawk Valley Community College (12-3) on October 27. The winner of that game advances to the Region III championship game, against the winner of a contest between Herkimer (15-0) and Broome Community College (11-4). The championship game also will be played at Herkimer, at noon on October 28.

The winner of the Region III tourney advances to the national championship tournament, a two-day event that begins on November 10 in Germantown, Maryland.

In the 2000-01 academic year, Hudson Valley's athletic teams combined to win 72 percent of their contests. The ice hockey team won the NJCAA championship, the baseball team earned a berth in the NJCAA World Series and the football team won the Region III title. The women's basketball team earned a No. 1 national ranking and turned in a 24-3 record while the men's hoop squad competed in the Region III championship game. Additionally, two Vikings earned Region III Player-of-the-Year status, 20 were named All-Region III performers, and 10 were honored with All-American status.
