Hudson Valley Community College Men's Soccer 2010 Season Preview

The Hudson Valley Commnity College men's soccer team looks to improve on their 9-8-1 record from 2009 and their quarter-final exit in the Region III Tournament in the 2010 season.

Head coach Travis Cooke enters his fifth season excited about his 2010 squad, but realizing the struggles of going against tough competition within Region III. "Midfielders Sean Shields and James Belcastro need to have record numbers in goals and assists for us to be title contenders," Cooke said.

Other players who will be heavily relied upon are captain Blaine Mendrysa and goalkeeper Renardo Dixon. Other key returners are forward Miguel Pinto, midfielders Brandon Fish and John Murray and defenseman Joe VanAllen.

"Blaine is a returning starter who will need to fill the void of Collin Legge from last year," Cooke continued. "He is a very good finisher and can strike from long distances. His leadership will be the key to a successful season."

Cooke also spoke on his talented goalie, Renardo Dixon. "Renardo is the best player on the team," Cooke stated. "He is very quick and covers all corners of the goal. He can't be beat by easy shots and he will keep us in many games this season. He will be the leader of the defense and will be very important to how far we will go in the season."

Incoming players to watch for are forward Joe Lombardo, midfielder Chris Bowman and defensive crew John Stall, Tyler Mashaw and Andrew Mattot.

The Vikings open their season on Thursday, Sept. 2 against rival Herkimer County Community College.
