1999 Coach Of The Year Takes Over At Hudson Valley

A 1999 Coach of the Year honoree, John Meehan has been named to lead Hudson Valley Community College's men's soccer team this season. Meehan, who recently relocated to Cohoes from Michigan, was named to the post by Hudson Valley coordinator of athletics Drew Marrochello.

"John brings a lot of enthusiasm and energy to Hudson Valley," Marrochello said. "He's a proven winner and we expect our program to benefit from his expertise, on and off the field."

Meehan grew up in Mercer County, N.J., but spent summers with his grandmother in Grafton. A four-year starter at Worchester Polytechnic Institute, Meehan is also involved locally with the Brunswick Soccer Club and the Capital District Youth Soccer League.

Meehan spent the last three years as head coach of Michigan's St. Clair High School's varsity boys' team. In 1999, he led the club to a 13-3-3 overall record, capturing the school's first league title, and was named Coach of the Year by the Port Huron Times Herald. Michigan House of Representatives member Lauren M. Hager called Meehan a "positive role model for young people".

"I'm excited about this opportunity," Meehan said. "And everyone who makes the squad this year is going to contribute. We won't have one person running the show; it'll be a team effort."

Meehan also works as a sales engineer for Tri-State Electric Motors in Troy. The Hudson Valley men's soccer team begins practice with double sessions on August 21. The Vikings, who were 7-8-2 in 1999, play their first game on September 9, on the road against Paul Smith's College.

Hudson Valley Community College, located in Troy, offers more than 50 degree and certificate programs in four academic divisions; Business; Engineering and Industrial Technologies; Health Sciences; and Liberal Arts and Sciences. One of 30 community colleges in the State University of New York system, Hudson Valley has an enrollment of more than 9,000 students each year, and is known as a leader in distance learning initiatives and worker retraining. - 30 - CONTACT: Jeff Foley (518) 629-8085 or (518) 373-1262
