Hudson Valley Men’s Soccer Defeats North Country

The Hudson Valley Community College (5-3/3-3 Region III) men’s soccer team scored three second-half goals en route to a 4-2 win over North Country Community College today in Troy.
The two teams were knotted at 1-1 at halftime. Freshman Joe Smith (Mechanicville/Mechanicville High School) scored for Hudson Valley in the 20th minute and Dean Atkins tied the game with a goal for North Country in the 40th minute.
Hudson Valley opened up a 3-1 lead early in the second half. Freshman Kevin Long (Warwick/Warwick Valley High School) scored on a header 6:31 into the second half, and sophomore Sean Fitzgerald (Saratoga Springs/Saratoga Springs High School) headed a cross in the net two minutes later.
Hudson Valley controlled the ball for much of the next 20 minutes before North Country’s Jeff Esslinger scored on a breakaway with 17:27 remaining in the game to cut the Vikings lead to 3-2.
Freshman Jerome Reynolds (Albany/Albany High School) put the game away with 4:11 remaining when, after getting tripped up in the box, he converted on a penalty kick.
Hudson Valley returns to action when it travels to Tompkins Cortland Community College for a 6 p.m. contest on Wednesday, September 19.
