The Hudson Valley Community College (8-10-2) men’s soccer team had its season come to an end with a 2-1 loss at Alfred State College in the quarterfinals of the Region III Tournament.
CJ Goodwin (Duanesburg) broke a 1-1 tie with a goal with just 5:49 remaining to lift the Alfred State to the win
Colin Coon (Trumansburg) gave the Pioneers the lead at 37:08 of the first half when he found the back of the net after getting a pass from Cole Finnemore (Genesee Valley). Dustin Falkner (Letchworth) was also credited with an assist.
The Vikings answered right back when they were awarded a penalty kick with 34:59 remaining in the first half. Sam Mallabar's (Guilderland/Guilderland High School) penalty kick was stopped by Pioneer goalie Chris Coogan (Rome Free) but Mallabar scored on the rebound shot.
Both teams had chances to take the lead but it wasn't until 5:49 in the 2nd half when the Pioneers could capitalize. Dom Bisone's (Tonawanda) corner kick bounced off a few people in front of the net and found the foot of Goodwin who slide it past the Viking goalkeeper.
Alfred State held a 10 to 6 shot advantage. Coogan finished with five saves in net while Nicholas Marciano (Colonie/Colonie High School) made six saves for Hudson Valley.
