With its top four scorers and leading goaltender returning, the Hudson Valley Community College men’s soccer team will be looking to improve on last year’s team that finished 10-7 and advanced to the Region III Tournament.

However, improving that record will not be easy with four nationally-ranked teams on the schedule, including the season and home opener this Friday against No. 14 Tompkins Cortland Community College. The game kicks off at 4 p.m.

Leading the Vikings attack this season will be sophomores Corey Terpening (Waterford/Waterford-Halfmoon High School) and James Frederick (Copake/Taconic Hills High School). The two forwards combined for 40 points a year ago. Terpening had 14 goals and four assists and Frederick had two goals and four assists.

Sophomore Sam Mallabar (Guilderland/Guilderland High School), an All-Region performer a year ago, should be a playmaker at midfield this year. He was the Vikings second leading scorer with four goals and two assists last season. He’ll be joined in the midfield by sophomore Zubair Khan (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa High School) and freshmen Ryan Yurista (Schodack/Maple Hill High School) and Kyle Laine (Castleton/Maple Hill High School).

Sophomore Matt Richburg (East Greenbush/Columbia High School) and freshmen Robert O’Connor (North Greenbush/Columbia High School), Alfred Karam (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa High School) and Blakeman Smith (Brunswick/Tamarac High School) are expected to come together to make up a young but talented defense.

Sophomore Nick Marciano (Colonie/Colonie High School) will get the start in goal. He played every minute in goal for the Vikings a year ago, posting a 1.42 goals against average.

“We have good team speed and should be able to score a lot of goals this season,” said first year head coach Travis Cooke. “We need to work on some of our wing play and set pieces before we kick off the season Friday.”

Hudson Valley plays its first three games at home this season. Following Friday’s game, the Vikings will host Corning Community College at 3 p.m. on Sunday, September 3 and defending national champion and No. 1 Herkimer County Community College on Saturday, September 9.

Hudson Valley’s other two games against preseason nationally-ranked opponents are October 7 at No. 13 Mohawk Valley Community College and October 19 at No. 6 Ulster County Community College.
