The Hudson Valley Community College (10-6) men's soccer team advanced to the quarterfinals of the NJCAA Region III Division III Tournament with a 3-0 win over SUNY Canton (9-10) on Saturday in Troy.

Hudson Valley, the tournament's fifth seed, will advance to play fourth-seed Mohawk Valley Community College at 3 p.m. on Tuesday, October 25.

SUNY Canton was out shot 20-3 but kept the game close thanks in part to freshman goalie Ryan Howe (Madrid, N.Y.) who had a season-high 13 saves. Hudson Valley went ahead 1-0 in the 27th minute when Corey Terpening (Waterford/Waterford-Halfmoon High School) scored the first of his two goals from Nick Lynch (Colonie/Colonie High School).

That scored held until the final two minutes of the game when the Vikings pumped in two more goals with the Northstars pressing their entire team, including Howe, up the field looking to tie the game. Hudson Valley's second goal came in the 89th minute when Rui Vasconcelos (Lake Mary, FL/Lake Mary High School) scored from Terpening to make it 2-0. With 32 seconds left the Northstars had a throw in deep in the offensive end which the Vikings were able to clear and Terpening won the race to the loose ball and scored in an empty net for the final score.

Nick Marciano (Colonie/Colonie High School) had two saves for the Vikings in notching his second shutout over the Northstars this season.
