Early Showdown Between Nationally-Ranked Teams Kicks Off at 1 p.m. in Troy

When looking at the Hudson Valley Community College men's soccer team's schedule at the start of the 2004 season, the Vikings could have been excused if they started out slow this year. However, a 2-0-1 start has helped propel Hudson Valley to ninth in the latest National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division III poll.

Hudson Valley's schedule had the Vikings playing its first four games against teams ranked in the NJCAA preseason top-15 poll, including this Saturday's contest against second-ranked Herkimer County Community College. The game kicks off at 1 p.m. in Troy.

Herkimer (2-0-1) has won five NJCAA national soccer championships and 14 consecutive Region III titles entering this season. Hudson Valley last defeated the Generals in 1999, but the last two regular season meetings have been competitive one-goal contests.

Hudson Valley is looking for its fifth consecutive season with 10 or more wins. The Vikings opened the year with wins over Dutchess Community College and Holyoke Community College, and tied Morrisville State College.

Sophomore Ryan Clair (Schenectady/Schenectady High School) leads the Vikings with two goals thus far this season. Sophomore Mike Vooris (Castleton/Maple Hill High School) and freshman Craig Houck (Altamont/Berne-Knox-Westerlo High School) have contributed a goal apiece.

Hudson Valley freshman goalkeeper Ryan Savery (East Greenbush/Columbia High School) has a 0.759 goals against average in 237 minutes of action.
