The Hudson Valley men’s soccer season came to an end on Saturday
with a 2-0 setback to Herkimer Community College in the semifinals of
the NJCAA Division III Region III Tournament in Utica. The Vikings advanced
to the semifinals with a second round win over Broome Community College
on Tuesday, October 22.
Rafael Luna (Albany/Albany High School) scored with less than
seven minutes remaining in the game to lead Hudson Valley to a 1-0 win
over Broome. Assisting on the goal were Ben Sener (Clifton Park,
NY/Shenendehowa High School) and Faber Kelly (Saratoga Springs/Saratoga
Hudson Valley Community College men’s soccer coach John Meehan
was named the Mountain Valley Conference Coach of the Year for the second
straight year on Thursday, October 24.
Meehan led the Vikings to an 11-7 record in his third season at the
helm. Meehan has won 36 games, against only 16 defeats, during his tenure
at Hudson Valley and consistently has the Vikings ranked in the NJCAA
Division III poll.
The league’s Coach of the Year a year ago, Meehan also was named
the NJCAA Division III Region III Coach of the Year and the Junior College
North Region Coach of the Year by the National Soccer Coaches Association
of America in 2001.
Luna, Kelly and goalkeeper Pete Testa (Niskayuna/Niskayuna High
School) earned First Team All-Mountain Valley Conference honors
while midfielder Joe Teator (Castleton, NY/Maple Hill High School)
and defenseman Garth Ellms (Burnt Hills/Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake
High School) were named to the league’s Second Team.
Luna finished the season with eight goals and 11 assists while Kelly
was second in scoring with seven goals and seven assists. Testa allowed
only 1.4 goals per-game, which was second among goalies in Region III.
