The Hudson Valley Community College lacrosse team (7-5) was victorious over conference rival Herkimer County Community College, 13-11, on Thursday, April 22. The win gave the Vikings their second consecutive Mountain Valley Conference Championship.
Herkimer was first to strike in the contest, but the Vikings responded by ripping off four unanswered goals. Hudson Valley would increase its lead to four as they went up 8-4 in the second quarter and took advantage of the undisciplined play of Herkimer that would be a key to the Vikings' victory. The first half ended with Hudson Valley leading, 10-7.
The second half was heavily defensive with great goalie work by both sides. Herkimer once again struck first, narrowing the Viking lead to two. Hudson Valley would eventually be outscored in the third, two-to-one, making it an 11-9 game heading into the fourth. Alan Hiltz (La Salle, Wynantskill) made big save after big save in the closing minutes as the Vikings added two goals in the quarter to win the game and the conference, 13-11.
Freshman James Christenson (Bethlehem, White Plains) had the biggest game of his Viking career with four goals and two assists in the contest. Hudson Valley's leading scorer, Rich Bamberger (St. John's, Brimfield, MA), had two goals and three assists and Troy Martin (Werribee Secondary, Melbourne, AUS) had two goals and an assist. Hiltz had 14 saves on the day.
The Vikings play their final regular season game at home Sunday, April 25 against Cayuga Community College at 1 p.m.
