The Hudson Valley Community College ice hockey team has been selected to play in the National Junior College Athletic Association championship tournament for the second consecutive season.
Hudson Valley, the No. 5 seed, will meet fourth-seeded SUNY Canton at 3:30 p.m. on Friday, March 3 in the opening round of the six-team event. The tournament will be played at the Bud Bakewell Arena in Buffalo, NY.
For the first time in the tournament’s 35-year history, all colleges selected for the tournament are in Region III. North Country Community College received the top seed after posting a 10-2 record in the region and a 17-5-2 overall mark.
Hudson Valley and Canton split their two meetings this season. Hudson Valley won, 5-2, in Troy on December 10, and lost, 7-3, in Canton on January 28.
After winning only three of its first nine games this season, Hudson Valley has rebounded to post a 10-11-2 record. The Vikings have two more tune-up games before the tournament; at the Ramapo Junior Rangers on Saturday, February 25 and home against Hoosac Prep on Tuesday, February 28.
Ten Hudson Valley players have accumulated more than 10 points this season, led by sophomore Jeff Beecher (South Glens Falls/South Glens Falls High School), who ranks ninth in the NJCAA with 37 points (15 goals, 22 assists). Freshman Dane Anderson (Newburgh/Newburgh Free Academy) has 17 goals and 11 assists and sophomore Chris Gramlich (Philadelphia, PA/Bishop McDevitt High School) has nine goals and 15 assists.
Hudson Valley’s lone NJCAA championship came in 2001 against Minot State University-Bottineau. Canton has won 15 national titles. The last one came in 2000. Morrisville State College, the No.3 seed in this year’s tournament, has won the last two national titles.
