Sturges Nets Hat Trick In First Two Periods

Troy, January 12 – Any winter break-induced rust washed off quickly. Hudson Valley Community College's ice hockey team, coming off a 34-day stretch in which they played no games, got onto the scoreboard just 1:55 into their Eastern Junior College Hockey League (EJCHL) matchup with Erie Community College. Playing at Troy's Conway Ice Arena, the Vikings never trailed, skating to a 6-1 victory.

Hudson Valley, in second-place in the EJCHL, is now 10-4 overall and 7-2 in league play. Erie is 7-7-1 overall and 7-6-1 in the EJCHL.

Freshman forward Aaron Chandler (Ithaca) scored the game-winner on a point-blank rifle shot. Chandler was camped out on the right side of Erie's net when Mike Griffiths (Bethlehem) slipped the puck to him. Chandler knocked the puck home as soon as it touched his stick. Phil Usas (Saratoga) also was credited with an assist.

After the opening goal, another freshman forward, Jim Sturges (East Hampton, MA), took over. Sturges scored the next three Hudson Valley goals, compiling a hat trick in the first two periods. He now has 11 goals and a team-high 27 points on the season.

While Hudson Valley's offense dominated, managing 37 shots over 60 minutes, B.J. Sheehan (Albany Academy) and Jason Vasco (CBA) combined to make 25 saves. Mike Santamoor (Saratoga) and Nate Snow (Burnt Hills) also scored. Usas had three assists and Mike Paine (Saratoga) helped on two goals.
