A nine minute lapse in the second period is all it took to send the Hudson Valley Community College ice hockey team home from its first National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) tournament since 2001.

Monroe Community College scored four goals in the first 9:12 of the second period and cruised to a 6-1 win over Hudson Valley in the opening round of the tournament in Morrisville.

Monroe scored first, 9:20 into the opening period, on a goal by sophomore Ryan Gaiek (Rochester).

Sophomore Mike Van Baaren (Albany/LaSalle Institute) tied the game for the Vikings four minutes later, and the two teams went into the first intermission tied at 1-1.

Freshman Steve LeDuc (Rochester) broke the tie, 57 seconds into the second period, with the first of his two goals on the day. Sophomore Jim Fogarty (Rochester) and freshmen Pat Kieffer (Fairport) and Tim Penrose (Rochester) also scored for the Tribunes on the day.

Monroe outshot the Vikings, 34-20. Sophomore Tim Norris (North Olmstead, OH) stopped 19 shots for Monroe.

Hudson Valley finished the year with an 11-8-1 record – its fourth winning season in the program's history.
