Hudson Valley Ice Hockey Defeats Mohawk Valley

The Hudson Valley Community College ice hockey team (10-6-1) assured itself of its first winning record since the 2001-02 season with an 8-2 win over Mohawk Valley Community College earlier tonight in Troy.

After a scoreless opening period, Hudson Valley took a 2-0 lead on goals by Mike Van Baaren (Albany/LaSalle Institute) and Jeff Beecher (South Glens Falls/South Glens Falls High School).

Mohawk Valley responded by tying the game in the second period with goals by Mike Chiellino and Drew Farley.

Hudson Valley's Kenny Holvig (New City/Clarkstown South High School) scored to give the Vikings a 3-2 lead with 4:45 remaining in the second period, and Hudson Valley would go on to add five more goals in the final period.

Van Baaren, Holvig, Travis Larson (Burnt Hills/Burnt Hills-Ballston lake High School), Joe Evers (Albany/LaSalle Institute) and Stephen Barrett (Claverack/Hudson High School) all scored for the Vikings in the third period.

Goalie Bryan McDonald (Ballston Lake/Shenendehowa High School) stopped 18 shots in net for Hudson Valley.

Hudson Valley will play its final regular season game when it hosts SUNY Canton at 1 p.m. on Saturday, February 19. The Vikings will then hope to receive one of the six bids to the NJCAA national tournament, which will be announced this weekend.
