The Hudson Valley Community College ice hockey team won its third straight game to open the season for only the second time in the program's history with an 8-4 victory over the Boston Jr. Blackhawks earlier today in Troy.

Hudson Valley, which improves to 3-0 for the first time since 1999 when the Vikings won their first five games, will play at Monroe Community College at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, November 12.

The Vikings exploded for five goals in the first period to take a 5-2 lead into the first intermission. Sophomore Mike VanBaaren (Albany/LaSalle Institute) scored two of his three goals in the opening period. Freshman Chris Gramlich (Philadelphia, PA/Bishop McDevitt High School) and sophomores Kenny Holvig (New City/Clarkstown South High School) and Devin Krichbaum (Pattersonville/Sault Ste Marie, MI High School) also scored in the opening period for the Vikings.

The Blackhawks, who are the fifth ranked Junior B team in the country by "USA Junior Hockey" magazine, responded with two goals in the second period to cut their deficit to 5-4.

Hudson Valley put the game out of reach in the third period with a short-handed goal by sophomore Stephen Barrett (Claverack/Hudson High School), and even-strength goals by VanBaaren and freshman Steve Sisk (Hudson/Hudson High School).

Sophomore goalie Bryan McDonald (Ballston Lake/Shenendehowa High School) made 27 stops in net for the Vikings.
