Hudson Valley Nearly Guts Out Come-From-Behind
Victory Against Mohawk Valley

Troy, December 6 – Hudson Valley Community College's hockey team rallied like a champion against visiting Mohawk Valley Community College this evening, but suffered a gut-wrenching loss as time expired. After the Vikings valiantly battled back from a 3-0 deficit to tie the Eastern Junior College Hockey League matchup at four goals apiece with just 1:08 left in the third period, Mohawk Valley slapped home the game-winner at 19:59, escaping Troy's Conway Ice Arena with a 5-4 victory.

Mohawk Valley jumped in front with three goals in the opening period, but Hudson Valley battled back and controlled the second 20 minutes, outshooting the Hawks 23-4. Second-year defenseman Kevin Graber (Troy) put the Vikings on the board by skating end-to-end and beating Mohawk Valley's goalie with a high wrister.

The Vikings also controlled much of the third period, outshooting Mohawk Valley 20-9. Mohawk Valley scored the first goal of the frame, but Mike Santamoor (Saratoga) and Aaron Chandler (Ithaca) each netted a score to bring the Vikings within one goal, 4-3. Then, with 1:39 left in the game and Hudson Valley at a one-man advantage, head coach Ron Kuhl pulled Jason Vasco (CBA) off the ice, giving the Vikings a six-on-four.

At 18:52, with five or six players crowded around Mohawk Valley's net, Phil Usas (Saratoga) managed to poke the puck home, from his knees, tying the game at four. Hudson Valley put Vasco back between the pipes and the contest appeared headed for overtime until Mohawk Valley scored its improbable, last-second goal.

Vasco stopped 23 shots for Hudson Valley. Jim Sturges (East Hampton, MA) and Chris Paine (Saratoga) each contributed a pair of assists.

Hudson Valley, ranked first among NJCAA Region III teams, is now 8-4. Mohawk Valley is 7-5.
