The SUNY Canton (2-2/2-0 Region III) ice hockey team scored a goal in each of the first two periods and held on for a 2-1 win over Hudson Valley Community College (1-1/0-1 Region III) earlier today in Troy.
With the help of a two-man advantage, sophomore Jon Sparks (Canton) gave the Northstars a 1-0 lead midway through the opening period. Canton stretched its lead to 2-0 on a goal from freshman Matt Kargus (Pembroke, Ontario), 1:17 into the second period.
Freshman Andrew Usas (Saratoga Springs/Winchendon, MA School) cut Hudson Valley's deficit to one with a power-play goal from just inside the blue line.
The Vikings applied a lot of pressure in the third period, outshooting Canton 10-6 in the period, but were unable to find the back of the net over the final 18 minutes.
Freshman goalie Bryan McDonald (Ballston Lake/Shenendehowa High School) made 32 saves in net for Hudson Valley.
The Vikings will travel to Broome Community College on Friday, November 7. The game begins at 7 p.m.
