Freshman forward Matt Benedetto (Rotterdam/Mohonasen High School) scored the game-winner with 3:04 remaining in the overtime as the Hudson Valley Community College (2-6) ice hockey team upset Erie Community College 4-3 this afternoon in Troy.
The game was a complete turnaround from when these two teams met in Buffalo on November 23. Erie (9-3) won that game 14-2 and was riding a seven game winning streak entering today's contest.
Benedetto took the pass from sophomore forward Brent Sheehan (Troy/Christian Brothers Academy) and blasted a wrist-shot from the left side that sailed over the Erie goaltender's shoulder and into the net for the winning goal.
Hudson Valley tied the game up on a goal from sophomore defenseman Matt Luther (Guilderland/Guilderland High School) with 2:50 remaining in the third period. Also registering goals for Hudson Valley were Sheehan and freshman forward Mike Guilfoil (Liverpool/Liverpool High School).
Freshman goaltender Dave Baranowski (Valley Falls/Hoosic Valley High School) stopped 36 shots for the Vikings to pick up his second win of the season.
Hudson Valley will host Monroe Community College on Wednesday, January 15 beginning at 6:30 p.m.
