Troy, N.Y., January 11, 2002 – Hudson
Valley Community College's ice hockey team rallied from a 4-1 deficit in
the third period against Erie Community College tonight, scoring a pair
of goals in a 12-second span to make it a one-goal game, but the Vikings
could get no closer. Erie held on to defeat Hudson Valley, 4-3, at the
Conway Ice Area in Troy.
Hudson Valley, the defending NJCAA champion,
is now 8-4-1 overall. Erie is 8-4.
At 8:11 in the final period tonight, with Hudson
Valley trailing 4-1, Jim Sturges (East Hampton H.S., MA) slapped
a knuckleballing rebound into Erie's net. Then, at 8:23, Brian Mohan
(La Salle Institute), the leading scorer in Section II last season,
took a pass from Sturges and rocketed the puck just under the crossbar,
pulling the Vikings to within one goal.
Hudson Valley continued to attack Erie; the Vikings
outshot Erie, 12-4, in the third period. Erie, however, fended off the
remainder of the barrage and left Troy with a victory.
Shea Vandervort (Northern Burlington H.S.)
scored Hudson Valley's first goal, in the second period. Shea's brother,
Dean Vandervort (Northern Burlington H.S.), had a pair of assists,
as did Mike Santamoor (Saratoga H.S.). Jason Vasco (CBA) made
14 saves for the Vikings.
