Hudson Valley Community College's football
team will host Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute's JV squad at 1 p.m. on
Sunday, October 28. Due to construction of a minor-league baseball stadium
at Hudson Valley, the non-conference game, Hudson Valley's last of the
season, will be played at Troy's La Salle Institute.
The Vikings (5-2 overall, 4-0 Northeast Football
Conference) lost to Navy Prep, 21-14, on October 20. Dylan Cooper (Saratoga
H.S.) tossed two touchdown passes for Hudson Valley in the loss.
The Vikings are led by All-American wide receiver
Shawn Miller (Troy H.S.), who holds Hudson Valley's record for receiving
yards in a game (189) and receptions in a game (11). He has 41 receptions
for 590 yards and seven touchdowns this season. Fellow wide receiver Derrick
Dyer (John Marshall H.S.) has 25 catches for 415 yards and six touchdowns.
Additionally, placekicker John Butera (Greece Olympia H.S.) has
kicked 21 extra points this season – he needs just four more to break Hudson
Valley's single-season record (John Taylor made 24 in 1997).
RPI's JV team is 1-2 this season. The Engineers last
played on October 14, losing to Union College's JV, 40-0.
Hudson Valley's football program was established
in 1969. At the time, Hudson Valley was one of only two junior colleges
in New York to field a varsity football team. Since then, nearly 300 Hudson
Valley football players have earned scholarships to four-year schools and
15 have gone on to play professionally. The Vikings competed in the Coca
Cola Bowl in Iowa in 1980. In 1996, Hudson Valley posted an 8-0 record,
part of a dominant stretch that included 15 straight victories.
