Former Ravena High School and current Hudson Valley Community College standout Gary Jones was named Northeast Football Conference Offensive Player of the Week today. Jones, a 5-foot-10, 200-pound tailback, earned the honor for his efforts in Hudson Valley's 39-9 downing of NFC rival Dean Junior College on September 23.
Against Dean, Jones rumbled for 123 yards and two touchdowns on 23 carries. He scored from 15 and five yards out, and leads Hudson Valley with 371 yards and six touchdowns in four games. Jones, who ran for Ravena from 1996-98, is averaging 5.2 yards per carry.
Hudson Valley (2-2, 1-2 NFC) travels to SUNY Canton (2-2, 0-2 NFC) for a 1:30 matchup on September 30.
Hudson Valley's football program was established in 1969. At the time, Hudson Valley was one of only two junior colleges in New York to field a varsity football team. Since then, nearly 300 Hudson Valley football players have earned scholarships to four-year schools and 15 have gone on to play professionally. The Vikings competed in the Coca
Cola Bowl in Iowa in 1980. In 1996, Hudson Valley posted an 8-0 record, part of dominant stretch that included 15 straight victories.
