Newport, R.I., Sept. 7, 2002 – Hudson Valley Community College held homestanding Navy Prep to 55 yards of total offense and just one offensive score this afternoon, but Navy Prep pulled off a 28-19 win. In addition to scoring on a returned fumble recovery, Navy Prep returned two blocked punts for touchdowns.

Hudson Valley, which gained 312 yards of total offense, is now 0-1. Navy Prep is 1-0.

The Vikings completely shut down Navy Prep's passing game, allowing no completions on seven attempts. Second-year defensive back Francis B. Brown (Camden, N.J.) led the way for Hudson Valley, picking up a pair of interceptions. Audwin Davis Jr. (Tuckahoe), a linebacker, contributed two quarterback sacks.

The Vikings also were tough against the run, holding Navy Prep to 55 yards on 36 carries.

Tight end Anthony Martinez (Colonie), a Division I prospect, provided Hudson Valley's biggest offensive play, turning a fourth-quarter pass from Ronly London (Clifford J. Scott, NJ) into a 70-yard touchdown. Martinez broke three tackles and picked up 50 yards after the catch, rumbling into the end zone and cutting Navy Prep's lead to two points, 21-19.

London, who ran the ball in from five yards out for a first-quarter score, finished with 173 passing yards. Cecil Givens (Mt. Pleasant, DE) had three receptions for 44 yards. Buchie Ibeh (Clifford J. Scott) had two catches for 46 yards.

Emmanuel Marc (Spring Valley) – 58 yards on 16 carries – and Larry Starks II (Watervliet) – 52 yards and a touchdown on eight carries – powered Hudson Valley's ground game.

Hudson Valley plays its first home game of the season, at La Salle Institute, at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 15, hosting Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute's JV squad.
