Baseball Splits with Royals

The Hudson Valley Community College baseball team (7-5) split with Schenectady County Community College (17-7), winning game one 8-0, but falling in extra innings, 9-6 in game two.
Hudson Valley pounded out 14 hits and Josh Temple (Cohoes/Cohoes) allowed only one hit, earning the shutout in game one. Temple pitched fivescoreless innings, striking out seven and Mike Verschelden (Chatham/Chatham) pitched a clean sixth and seventh. Andy Kozak (Sidney/Sidney) led the Vikings going 4-4 at the plate with three RBIs and three runs scored. John Craig (Shenendehowa/Clifton Park) blasted his second homerun of the season to deep left-center and finished the game with three RBIs. Brett Fenton (Catholic Central/Troy) and Bradley Adams (Catholic Central/Troy) each added two hits in the shutout victory.
The Vikings came up just short in game two, falling in extra innings 9-6. Kozak picked up where he left off in game one, delivering a solo homerun in the fourth. Trailing by two in the fifth, Alex Lushkevich (Saratoga/Saratoga Springs) tied the game on a two-out, two-run single. The Royals battled back in the seventh to retake a 6-5 lead, but Craig scored on a throwing error in the bottom half of the inning to push the game to extra innings. In the eighth, Schenectady scored three runs which was just enough to earn the win.
The Vikings travel to Adirondack for a doubleheader on Saturday starting at 1 p.m.
