Elvis Climes sets stolen base record

The Hudson Valley Community College baseball team swept a doubleheader over Broome Community College earlier today at Joseph L. Bruno Stadium in Troy. Hudson Valley won the opener, 4-2, and the second game, 10-0.

The Vikings improve their record to 31-8 on the season. It is the third time in the last four years that Hudson Valley has had at least 30 wins in a season. Broome falls to 14-15.

Trailing 2-1 in the opening game, Hudson Valley rallied for three runs in the fifth inning on back-to-back RBI triples by freshman Joel Molina (Middletown/Middletown High School) and Ryan Gijon-Owen (Puebla, Mexico/Bowie, TX High School), and an RBI single by sophomore Steve Sayre (East Greenbush/Columbia High School).

Gijon-Owen and Molina had two hits apiece in the opener, as did sophomore Rashad Barksdale (Hudson/Hudson High School).

With his stolen base in the first inning, sophomore Elvis Climes (Middletown/Middletown High School) established a new Hudson Valley single-season stolen base record. He currently has 26 thefts. Dan Soto set the previous mark of 24 stolen bases in 1998.

After allowing two runs and three hits in the first inning of the opener, freshman pitcher William Lewis (Middletown/Middletown High School) settled down to improve his record to 6-2 on the year. He struck out four, walked one, and only allowed six hits.

Freshman pitcher Nate Jones (Horseheads/Horseheads High School) tossed his third consecutive shutout for the Vikings in the second game. He scattered five hits in six innings of work. He struck out seven and walked three. Jones is 5-0 on the year and has not allowed a run in 19 consecutive innings.

Climes was three-for-four with two RBI for the Vikings in the nightcap. Molina added two hits and two RBI, and sophomore Justin Lasky (Lansingburgh/Lansingburgh High School) hit a pinch-hit two-run home run for the Vikings that finished the game in the sixth inning.
